SEI Hosts 23rd Annual SEPG North America in Portland

The Carnegie Mellon Software Engineering Institute (SEI) and Portland, Oregon, played host for SEPG North America 2011 from March 21-24, 2011. Approximately 650 professionals convened to learn and explore topics related to The Power of Process. This four-day gathering offered quality tutorials, top-notch technical sessions, engaging keynote addresses, and plentiful networking opportunities.

“From the exhibit hall to the session rooms to the social events, attendees used every opportunity to expand their professional networks, share knowledge, and discover practical solutions,” said Gian Wemyss, SEPG North America 2011 technical program co-chair.

“The technical discussions covered a range of topics, including agile and lean software methods, combining multiple models, the gap between software as developed versus deployed, CMMI and cloud computing, the Team Software Process, and the Accelerated Improvement Method,” added Palma Buttles, SEPG North America 2011 technical program co-chair.

SEPG: From Concept to Community

Tuesday opened with tribute to the late Watts Humphrey, founder of the SEI’s Software Process Program and a National Medal of Technology recipient, who died on October 28, 2010. Humphrey first introduced the notion of the Software Engineering Process Group in his book, Managing the Software Process, and the concept has now grown into an international conference series. A series of speakers shared their thoughts on Humphrey’s life and accomplishments.

“Watts’s numerous professional accomplishments are underscored by the fact that he began his SEI career when he was 62—an age when many people consider retirement,” said Anita Carleton, director, SEI Software Engineering Process Management Program. “Now, his life’s work is in our hands as we explore software engineering process, architecture, and security approaches that can serve as technical and business differentiators for world-class performance.”

Just before their address, Tuesday’s keynote speakers K. Dinesh and S. Kumar of Infosys Technologies Limited accepted the 2009 IEEE Computer Society/Software Engineering Institute Software Process Achievement (SPA) Award for establishing a cost-effective, sustained, and culturally integrated quality and productivity improvement program during a period of extraordinary corporate growth.

Tuesday evening, SEPG North America 2011 attendees tried their hand at the tables in a casino-themed gala reception. When their luck ran out, attendees had the option to purchase additional casino funds, the sales of which benefitted Tech Start, an Oregon nonprofit organization that promotes wider access to technology education for K-12 students.

Wednesday opened with keynote presentations from William “Liam” Durbin who spoke about “Racing Luck” and applying big-business IT skills to a niche business; and Dr. Harry Hertz, who offered insights on the Baldrige approach to performance excellence and shared easy steps attendees can take to improve their own organization. These presentations touched on the theme of fact-based decision-making versus pure intuition and luck, with the consensus being that there is room for both in professional ventures.

Reaching New Levels of Excellence in 2012

Wemyss also shared the official announcement regarding the SEPG North America 2012 location of Albuquerque, New Mexico. With the theme Reaching New Levels of Excellence, the 24th annual SEPG North America conference will help attendees to understand both principle and practice, to deliver value, and to maximize impact and business results that they can take home to their organizations.

SEPG is the premier global conference series on software and systems process management, and dates and locations have been set for future SEPG Conferences around the world. SEPG Europe 2011 will be held in Dublin, Ireland in June 7-9, 2011.

SEPG North America 2011 Conference Closing Remarks from Bob Rosenstein

“In the wee small hours of the morning, while all of you are fast asleep, you lie awake and think about this week, and never even think of counting sheep.”

With apologies to the songwriters Bob Hilliard and David Mann, these lyrics sum up my thoughts as we conclude SEPG North America 2011.

It has been my distinct privilege to lead the group of dedicated SEI staff who brought you the 23rd annual SEPG North America conference.  Whether at the podium, standing at the SEI exhibit booth, scurrying behind the scenes, or supporting from back in our offices in Pittsburgh, each and every person involved in this year’s conference has been united in our goal to bring you the best possible event.

As I have said to many of you throughout the week, I cannot emphasize how important your feedback through the surveys will be as we move forward with plans for SEPG North America 2012. While every comment, concern, or suggestion cannot be simultaneously resolved, we take your responses to heart and will do our best to improve next year’s event so that you are “Reaching New Levels of Excellence.”

I wish each of you safe journeys, continued success, and high hopes that we will see each other again in March 2012 in Albuquerque, NM.

Many Thanks!

Top 10 Tips for Delivering a Powerful PowerPoint Presentation

Welcome to Portland, Oregon! I am looking forward to meeting the many software, systems, and services process improvement professionals from around the world who are attending SEPG North America 2011. For many, the highlight of the conference is the cutting-edge technical program that features sessions selected by their peers.

Individuals presenting at this year’s SEPG North America—or anyone who is delivering a professional presentation, for that matter—may find these presentation tips helpful.

1. On-Time Arrival: Arrive on time for your presentation so that you can familiarize yourself with the presentation equipment in the session room. Learn how to seamlessly jump ahead or back to a certain slide, which your audience may request.

2. Face the Audience: Speak to your audience, not your slides. To fully engage your audience, make eye contact with them and speak toward them and try to avoid turning to your slides behind you.

3. Know Your Audience: You’re standing at the podium because you’re an expert on the topic, but don’t assume everyone else in the audience is on the same level. To relate to people at varying levels of expertise, avoid using jargon, and if you use acronyms, provide a brief definition.

4. Display Confidence: It’s okay to be nervous—it happens to many of us—but it’s not acceptable to be unprepared. Come to your presentation having practiced it several times. The more comfortable you are with your content, the easier it is to relax.

5. Use Humor…the Right Way: Don’t be afraid to incorporate an appropriate dose of humor into your presentation. But be sure that your humor is suitable for the audience and not culturally inappropriate.

6. Cite Your Sources: To display complete transparency and disclosure, know the source for all data that you cite that is not your own.

7. Pacing and Timing: Be aware of the time you have allotted for your presentation and pace yourself accordingly. Finish up your presentation in enough time to allow for audience questions.

8. Anticipate Questions: Before you ever step into the presentation room, spend some time thinking about questions that your audience is likely to ask, and formulate answers in the form of short sound bites so that you can deliver a complete yet succinct answer.

9. Stay on Topic: If audience comments begin to steer the presentation in a different direction, quickly steer the audience back on topic in a polite, assertive manner.

10. Connect: Include relevant social network information at the beginning and end. By including a Twitter name, Facebook group name, or LinkedIn group name, you’re giving your audience ways to connect with you long after your session is through. For attendees who are live-tweeting, this also tells them to what username to attribute key leanings—helping to further establish you as an expert and gain additional followers.

As a senior member of the technical staff at the SEI, I frequently stand up in front of groups of varying sizes to teach courses and deliver presentations at professional conferences and I remind myself of these tips before each presentation.

What tips did you find most helpful? Are there any tips you would like to share? Leave a comment on this post to share your thoughts.
